There are many types of environments in which railing posts can be mounted. Below are the different post types Viewrail supplies and when to use them.
Standard Surface Mount Posts
These are the most commonly used post types, and are needed anytime you are mounting on a level surface, and the post mounting screws are fastened into wood. A minimum of 3 1/2” screws are recommended for most surfaces, but 2.5” screws will work on Viewrail thick treads. Other mounting hardware can include through-bolts or hollow mounting kits.
Side Mount posts are used to mount to the fascia, or side, of the surface the railing is protecting. These use a 6” x 6” wide plate and are fastened with 6” screws or 4” through bolts. The top of the plate mounts 1 3/8” beneath the surface of the deck, balcony, or stair stringer.
These posts are a sleeker option for mounting to the fascia. The 2” x 6” plate is mounted using 6” lags or 4” through bolts. The top of the plate mounts 1.5” beneath the surface of the deck, balcony, or stair stringer.
Often balconies or decks have flooring or nosing overhangs. This post type mounts to the fascia while bumping out and around the nosing overhangs. These are mounted with 6” lags or 4” through bolts.
Custom made, these are used when mounting on an angled knee wall. They are custom engineered and manufactured to match your custom wall. 4” screws are recommended for this application.
With a larger foot plate than Surface Mount Posts, Special Application Posts are used when mounting on a level cement or concrete surface. Viewrail supplies recommended wedge anchors for mounting, although sourced concrete screws can work as well.
This post type is mounted into a pre-drilled 3” x 3” wide by 4.25” deep hole in cement or concrete surfaces. The body of the post is elongated and fastened into the hole with more cement or concrete.
