Getting Measurements For Your Glass Railing System – Posts
To help you get exact measurements for your new glass railing system, we’ve sent you a glass railing measuring kit for posts, this kit includes:
- Post Layout Drawing
- Template Guide
- Wood Screws
- Acrylic
Our plan is to help you gather the correct measurements seamlessly, so we can send them off to our engineering team quickly!
Step 1 – Identify Your First Run
In order to begin measuring for your new glass railing system, you’ll need to identify your first run. Inside the glass railing measuring kit there is a post layout drawing. Take that glass railing sheet and look for run #1. Once you find it, locate it on your deck so that you’re prepared for the next step
Step 2 – Using The Acrylic Post Templates
The surface mount post system measuring kit contains two different acrylic templates. There is:
- 1 corner piece
- 1 straight piece
The acrylic pieces represent the foot of the post & where it will be mounted on the deck or floor. The two prongs jetting out from the square will represent the glass clips that hold the glass panels in place. The straight piece will represent our railing on a straight run, and the corner, a corner run.
Step 3 – How to Measure for the Acrylic Pieces
When mounting on a corner, you want to account for the overhang when positioning the template in place. In order to do that, follow this step
First: measure the overhang to the acrylic piece (in the video above we get 1” of overhang)
Second: Measure the outside.
The Goal: Assuming there’s an overhang we want to position these 1” from the outside to ensure that the mounting locations directly back underneath the finished deck board. WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT: There needs to be proper mounting for the hardware for proper safety & code compliance.
Once measured, take the supplied screws and install the acrylic template in place.
Step 4 – Mounting the Opposite End
Once the corner is set, take the straight post template and set it at the opposite end of our run (make sure to take into account the overhang). Make sure the post template is in the exact location as that the actual post is going to be. Next, take your tape measure and measure from the leading edge. Make sure that the acrylic templates are lined up with the opposite end. Now is a good time to check to make sure if underneath where the acrylic templates are, there is good backing to drill into to ensure a safe glass railing system.
Step 5 – Using the Measuring Tape
When calculating this measurement we want to ensure that the tape measure is measuring from the outside of our foot to the outside of the opposite end’s foot. The measurement in the video above is 143 ¼ outside to outside. After measuring it, record the distance on the backside of this template guide. Label the type of run (the video is corer to straight), and record the length of the run. Repeat these steps for the rest of the runs in your glass railing system.
